SWTOTD 01 - An Introduction

It's taken me a little while to figure out what to replace the movie thoughts with, but now I've got it. This is a special year for many of us--the year we will finally see the last Star Wars film. Now I know that an obsession with Star Wars can be unhealthy and it sets one up for countless jokes and internet throttling, but frankly, none of that matters to me now as we race towards May 19th.

It's not that Star Wars means so much to me that that I live my life by the Jedi code or that I like to dress up in bathrobes and jump off of tree stumps in my backyard attacking evildoers. I don't have a rabid Star Wars collecting habit or anything, and I am fully ready to admit that many parts of ALL of the films don't sit well with me now, watching them as an adult. However, for all of us, I think there's this weird thing from childhood that slowly seeps out of our bodies as we age. It's not just an innocence, but it's also a joy and enthusiasm and ignorance about all of the things we learn later in life to pick apart, despise, or take for granted. I try to actively keep part of that, whatever it is, as a connection to who I was as a kid, and a reminder that I made promises to myself that I wouldn't turn into just another stuffy adult. So far, I think I'm doing okay with that and Star Wars has been a big help.

In 1999, when The Phantom Menace came out, It was a pretty pivotal time for me. Mid-20's, on my own and REALLY on my own for the first time, far from what was previously home, embarking on a career path, taking risks with the band, etc--it was a pretty voilatile and important time. It would have been pretty easy to let most of that youth slip away all at once and to jump head-first into the adult world of wine with dinner and watching the news and all that. But then, in the midst of all that, there was Star Wars. With trailers and action figures and the hope of a new movie, it was suddenly a lot easier to keep from turning into a nasty adult so quickly.

Now with the final installment approaching, it's clear that whatever spark it is that Star Wars has helped keep ignited is going to have to find another outlet--and it will. But for now, I'm getting the Star Wars dreams, I'm chatting on the Star Wars threads, and I'm writing music that's playfully inspired by lightsabers and blasters--so for now, this space will be home to the: Star Wars Thought of the Day. Enjoy.
