SWTOTD 06 - On Spoilers and Spoiling
8:06 PM | Zeroplate
I've already learned more than I want to know about Revenge of the Sith and it's mostly my fault. Part of the fun of anticipating these movies has been the thrill of learning new, juicy little bits about them each day. With The Phantom Menace, I managed to avoid most spoilers until I was in a comic shop in Birmingham one day and the idiot behind the counter decided to spill it for everyone that "Darth Maul can't be Boba Fett cause he gets cut in half at the end of the movie!" I was so pissed. I tried to unhear that--to pretend that I had misheard him, or that he was talking about some OTHER Darth Maul, but no, the end was completely ruined for me.
Of course the end was still cool and it was still fun to watch, but knowing that Maul wasn't going to be a presence in the whole trilogy, just the first chapter was kind of a downer going into the film. Likewise with Attack of the Clones, word got out early that Yoda stole the show with his fight scene. Just knowing that Yoda HAD a fight scene was spoiler enough. It ruined the moment when he finally busted out the lightsaber--well, no, no it didn't.
And that's just it--nothing can really SPOIL the movies when I'm seeing them, but they do make the twists and turns less interesting. But when I look back on my history of Star Wars fandom, I realize that every one of the films aside from the first one has come with spoilers, and I still love the saga as a whole. Before I ever got to see The Empire Strikes Back, some kid in the neighborhood who had been to the States where it was playing (we were in Germany at the time) ran up to me and said "DarthVaderisLuke'sDad" and then ran off. That little fucker! Okay, so Darth Vader is Luke's dad, yeah, that kinda takes the wind out of the sails of the cool reveal at the end of the movie. But you know, I still think Empire is my favorite of the whole series, so it can't be THAT bad. With Return of the Jedi, again living in Germany meant that kids in the States got to see the movie before us and were ever so happy to spill all the details about Luke's sister and Jabba and everything else. But we live on.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't tell me anything about Revenge of the Sith and I will not tell you what I already know and we can all pretend we didn't hear that... oh, nevermind.
