SWTOTD SWTOTD 12 - Poster Madness 8:12 PM | Zeroplate The Episode III theatrical poster is finally here, and that means we now have a six poster set featuring art done in the same style, by the same artist for the entire saga. I've taken the liberty of making myself a simple desktop wallpaper out of these designs, and I wanted to share it so if you have a 1024 x 768 desktop and want to see some posters, click HERE. Before I get to bitching and moaning about the posters, take a second to look at them all side by side. Despite my innumerable complaints, the whole set together is pretty cool. Now, since it wouldn't be a proper blog without some rant about the injustice of Star Wars, presented here is a stream of consciousness discussion I am having with myself. mj421: the three posters for the special editions of the original trilogy all have a smilarly sized blue-ish rectangular field in the background that makes them consistent. you can tell the new posters were painted over the course of 6 years and not all at once, which kinda sucks. obi-larvae: sure, but they are all done in the same style by the same guy, and that is far better than anything we've had before. the original movies spawned dozens of posters and none of them ever looked consistent from film to film. even the logos changed each movie (which was, agreeably, pretty cool). mj421:what's up with the lense flare effects? these were painted, not done in photoshop, so why are there mad lense flares everywhere on the Episode I-III posters? dude went overboard with the lens flares. obi-larvae:sure, but the new posters all have lightsabers, and lightsabers are cool. and check it out, all of the posters have ships flying out of them, so that's cool, right? mj421:i guess. you can't deny the best poster of the lot belongs to Empire. there's not even a picture of the heroes on that thing, it's all the villains and tie fighters and at-ats and shit. there's like one snowspeeder and it's running away and the emperor looks mean as all hell! obi-larvae:true, true. it's weird that the emperor looks so different from the Episode III poster though. i guess he ages kind of badly. i gotta say, yoda hopping out of that new poster with his lightsaber is kinda lame though, even if it's made up for by sam jackson with his. mj421:they had three chances to make obi-wan look as cool and powerful as he does on that original Star Wars poster and they blew them all. he's pretty suave on the Clones poster, but that's about it. and on that one, his suave is definitely upstaged by Jango Fett. obi-larvae:jango fett is a PIMP! but the best thing i'm noticing is that all the lame stuff from Phantom Menace is represented on the poster like young Anakin and Jar Jar and if you look at the Sith poster, aside from the Jedi frog, it all looks cool. The Duel, some pissed off Jedis, and the helmet of Darth Vader looming over it all. the red color scheme finally pays off! mj421:i agree. it gives me hope. no droid sidekicks, no gungans, no kids, no ewoks, just all the-- obi-larvae: NO WOOKIES! mj421: shit, you're right, no wookies. that blows. the wookies are going to rule and we don't get any on the poster. oh well, it's not a total loss. obi-larvae: not a total loss. it could be worse--the most prominent figure could be Jabba like on the Jedi poster. all in all, what would you really want to change though? mj421: the first thing, and this is something i think we'll see eventually, would be the use of the whole EPISODE blah blah thing with the film subtitles in all the posters. the originals weren't released that way or thought of like that... the term "Episode I" didn't mean much to anyone until it became the center of the Phantom Menace campaign. to make them all consistent, maybe they could at least fix the old ones up. get rid of the Ewok? tone down the lens flares, especially on the Phantom Menace poster. geez, what else? obi-larvae: yeah, loose the 'special edition' writing, lose the hopping yoda, give us a wookie before Jedi and get a leia that looks like the one in A New Hope instead of the one that looks like she's from Empire on the Episode IV poster and i think we're there. mj421: or just wait til they do it all again in 10 years with super duper special last final george is happy milk it one last time editions. obi-larvae: true. but for now, let me enjoy this.
