SWTOTD SWTOTD 17 - Geek Overload 3/31/2005 12:34:00 AM | Zeroplate Ladies and Gentlemen, I have hit Star Wars critical mass. This evening, after spending hours every night this week scanning pictures of toys, working on the artwork for our upcoming 12", scanning the web for the dumbest Star Wars related tie-ins, fan pictures, and bad ideas, I've finally had all that I can take. This whole SWTOTD thing has been an extended joke of sorts to help usher in our next 12" for Ad Noiseam. Truth be told, I don't think about Star Wars this much, but I've been forcing myself to come up with things to write about so I've been immersing myself in geekworld for the last couple of months. It's finally come to a head, and I've got to take a step back out for a little while. After poking my head into one too many discussions about "who's your favorite ancillary Jedi" and looking through one too many photo archives of fat dudes with beards in Jedi costumes, and after seeing one too many people take it all too seriously, I've decided that the grand joke I was playing out here is starting to backfire. It started with a real love for the movies, but it's never been a kind of love that would drive me to learn to speak Bocchi or tatoo a bounty hunter insignia on my back. I wanted to see what it was about this whole phenomenon that turned people into puddles of geek goo so often, and as I've dug deeper and deeper, it's started to take some of the fun out of the whole thing. The problem is that everything that I find funny or unbelievably dork-worthy or crass is something I'm constantly judging. With all that negativity, it's getting harder to remember why I enjoy any of this stuff in the first place. Too many cereal boxes, pop tarts, Slave Leia cosplays, and too many Star Wars weddings. In theory, all of it's fun and I can appreciate the fun side, but lately, at least tonight, it's gotten a lot darker and a lot more difficult to enjoy. So, I'll be stepping back from the SWTOTD thing for a while, and hopefully sequestering myself from message board rants about Jedi Padawan hairstyles and the like. Our record is done, and we'll start rolling out more fun stuff to promote it and explain it soon, but for now, I'm beat. Luckily the toys go on sale this Friday at midnight! :) Back to Top {0} Comments
