Just two more days until Revenge of the Sith. It's been a veritable Star Wars bonanza around here as we get ready to take in the last Star Wars movie ever (for now.) Saturday night we watched The Phantom Menace and after giving it several years of rest, I have to say that a lot of it is just boring. There's stuff in it that is flat-out stupid, but I understand that kids love it and that those parts are aimed at them. The stuff that's good is really good, but that's really only the final duel with Darth Maul and the reveal of each character. The rest is a lot of exposition that in hind-sight isn't very interesting. I think my biggest problem with it is that I now see exactly how it could have been made so much cooler.
Sunday we went to the Masquarade to catch Grand Moff Tarkin. They were back with full on costumes, set decoration, go-go dancers, and movie-authentic Stormtrooper bodyguards. They worked a Jar-Jar bit into the show that didn't really come off well, and after a while, the go-go dancers lose some of their allure, but all in all it was still a fun show. Seeing people genuinely amped up about Star Wars was fun, and watching a 6 year old kid throw the metal horns at Darth Vader was priceless.
Monday night was Attack of the Clones, a movie that I still like quite a bit and think is just as good as Return of the Jedi. I know, I know, blasphemy! But you know, aside from the two big set pieces in Jedi, namely the Sarlac Pit and the Vader/Luke/Emperor duel and assault on Death Star 2, what about Jedi is really that cool? Leia as Boussh--cool. Luke showing up as a full-blown jedi--cool. Beging captured by Ewoks, Mon Mothma giving a briefing, Yoda biting the dust, attacking the Endor shield generator? None of that is too much fun. Having Han and Leia and Chewie on the ground for the final battle and trying to get us to be excited about Lando piloting the Falcon was just a bad move. On the other hand, Clones has the bad ass introduction of Jango Fett, the cantina scene where Obi-Wan starts his tradition of hacking off arms in bars, Anakin's freak out and attack on the sandpeople, Mace Windu showing some Jedi badassness, and the final clone war bit and Anakin/Obi-Wan/Dooku/Yoda, all of which is great. So yeah, it's about on par with Jedi, but still has a lot of boring crap in it that I looked past the first four or five times I saw it.
Tonight, we'll screen the Clone Wars cartoons, finish the EMPIRE video, practice the live set for Wednesday, and then, it's on!
